What are the essential differences between lay and expert witnesses?

Answer: A lay witness needs no special knowledge and can testify:
a) Rationally based on his or her own perceptions
b) To matters helpful to a clear understanding of a fact in issue
c) Not based on scientific, technical or other specialized knowledge
An expert witness does need special knowledge and:
a) Testifies based on sufficient facts or date
b) The testimony is the product of reliable principles and methods
c) The witness has applied the principles and methods reliably to the facts of the case
